What is Ultimate?
Ultimate is a non-contact sport where teams compete to throw and catch a flying disc in opposing endzones. Ultimate is governed by Spirit of the Game, a tradition of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the players rather than referees. A player must stop running while in possession of the disc, but may pivot and pass to any of the other receivers on the field. Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. Ultimate is played in more than 80 countries by an estimated 7 million people. The international governing body, WFDF, represents 59 member associations in 56 countries.
Spirit of the Game
Probably the biggest difference between Ultimate and other sports is the importance of conflict resolution and integrity that is molded into the "Spirit of the Game". In ultimate there are no referees and instead players have to call their own fouls. In ultimate, players are held to a higher standard where they are responsible for making the correct foul calls as well as sorting disagreements out on the field through discussion. Without referees, the players have to settle disputes themselves, and it is in both side's favor to play a fun, respectful game. Ultimate stresses that this 'Spirit of the Game' can and should coexist with a strong competitive spirit. Unlike most sports, Ultimate places the responsibility of fair plan on the players themselves.
